Canton South Dakota  "A PREMIER SOUTH DAKOTA COMMUNITY"

History of the Canton Depot PDF Print E-mail

The railroad first came to Canton in 1879.  The existing depot was built in 1907.  It was served by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad.

The depot consisted of an Express Room, Cafe, Men and Ladies waiting rooms and a Ticket Office.  Records say that as many as 65 trains came in and out of Canton in a 24-hour period in its hey day.  The last passenger trains to come through Canton were in the 1960's.

The depot was moved to its current location in 1997 and renovations began on the building.  The Canton Chamber of Commerce moved its office into the south side of the depot in 2005.

In 2007,  the Depot parking lot became the home of the Canton Farmers Market.  The Canton Farmers Market is open every Wednesday evening starting in June and continueing through October depending on the weather.

With the change in the Canton government from five commissioners to nine commissioners in November of 2007, the Canton City Commission began holding its meetings in the depot.

Message from the Mayor

Welcome to our website!

Our fair City of Canton has chosen the mission statement: To be a premier South Dakota community. To that end our talented, dedicated city staff along with community leaders and the elected commissioners have embarked upon a strategic plan that lays the foundation for Canton to develop and grow a desirable, progressive community.

Rich in history and tradition "The Gateway City" of Canton is positioned to launch into the future. We are exploring green technology to power our community, expanding our infrastructure to handle growth, improving and expanding our amenities to exceed the desires of each generation, and are commencing on new collaborations with civic groups and our strong educational system to prove our commitment to be a premier South Dakota community.

I invite you to visit us.

Cordially,

Jonathan Toso, OD
